round enameled wire

Round enameled wire

Round Enameled wire, also known as magnet or winding wire, is a solid-core copper or aluminum wire coated with a thin, insulating film. The enamel insulation allows the wire to be wound tightly into coils without short-circuiting, making it a critical component for devices that rely on electromagnetic fields.

Round Enameled Copper Wire and Round Enameled Aluminum Wire

Round enameled wire guiding

For customers new to enameled round wire or responsible for product selection, it is essential to understand its key technical characteristics, recommended applications, and thermal class ratings.

1. Choosing the right wire gauge (AWG)

Wire gauge determines the diameter and electrical characteristics of the conductor. Choose the size based on current requirements and available coil space. The stated diameter refers to the bare copper / aluminum without enamel coating.

2. Differentiate enamel coatings for optimal performance

Each enamel material has distinct thermal, chemical, and mechanical characteristics. Understanding these differences helps customers choose the right wire for their application, ensuring safe and reliable operation under conditions like elevated temperatures, mechanical stress, or chemical exposure.
Typical classes are 130°C, 155°C, 180°C, and 200°C.

3. What does insulation build mean?

Insulation build defines the overall thickness of the enamel coating. Single, heavy, and quad builds are typical choices. Selecting the appropriate build balances dielectric protection, mechanical durability, and the number of coil turns achievable in a given space.
IEC Standard: Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4
JIS Standard: Type 0, Type 1, Type 2

4.Is enameled wire the same as magnet wire?

Yes, enameled wire and magnet wire are different names for the same product.

Types of enameled round wires

Self-bondable wire / self-soldering wire: bondable magnet wire has an additional adhesive layer over the primary insulation. When activated by heat or a solvent, this layer bonds the coils together, creating a self-supporting coil that doesn’t need a bobbin.
Normal enameled Wire: the enamel coating must be removed before welding.

Aluminum vs. Copper Enameled Wire

Aluminum wire offers advantages in weight and cost, but its electrical conductivity is lower than copper. Achieving equivalent performance requires a larger wire size, making copper a more energy-efficient choice for high-performance motors and transformers. Aluminum is typically used for large-scale electrical equipment where weight and cost are critical factors.

Feature Aluminum Wire Copper Wire
Conductivity Good (approx. 61% of copper) Excellent (The standard, 100% IACS)
Cost Significantly Cheaper More Expensive
Weight Lightweight (approx. 30% of copper’s weight) Heavy
Wire Size Requires a larger wire (thicker gauge) to carry the same current as copper. Can carry more current in a smaller diameter wire.
Oxidation Oxidizes quickly. The oxide layer does not conduct electricity and builds up resistance, which can cause overheating and fire. Oxidizes slowly (turns green). The oxide layer does conduct electricity and is not a significant fire hazard.
Thermal Expansion High rate of expansion and contraction with temperature changes. Low rate of expansion and contraction.
Strength/Durability Softer, more brittle, and more prone to breaking after repeated bending. Stronger, more ductile, and can withstand more bending without breaking.
Installation Requires special anti-oxidant paste and connectors (marked AL/CU) to prevent fire hazards. Standard, easier installation. No special compounds needed at connections.
